‘Off The Grid’ introduces mainstream to blockchain gaming

Gunzilla Games’ “Off The Grid” is a free-to-play, third-person battle royale game that currently holds the number 11 spot for free-to-play games on Epic Games’ online store. It briefly reached the number one position right after its launch.

Although still in early access, the game has garnered significant attention on the Twitch streaming platform. On October 11, 154,440 viewers tuned in to watch gamers stream the new release.

Off The Grid incorporates blockchain features that are based on an Avalanche (AVAX) subnet called GUNZ. This custom blockchain ecosystem enables players to create NFTs representing in-game items like weapons and skins.

By minting these items as NFTs or other on-chain items, players maintain control over their in-game possessions and can establish secondary markets for these items.

Off The Grid represents a sustainable approach to blockchain gaming as a AAA title. Unlike clicker games or other Web 3 experiences that prioritize token models, this game focuses on delivering a high-quality gaming experience.

Critics of typical blockchain games argue that their models are not sustainable. These games often attract users with rewards, but fail to retain them for the long term, resulting in a decline in user numbers after the initial payout.

Many industry experts believe that the key to success lies in creating engaging and immersive gameplay experiences that appeal to mainstream gamers, while incorporating token models or blockchain mechanics as utilities for in-game assets.

A recent survey conducted by Elympics, the Blockchain Game Alliance, and PlayToEarn revealed that over 10% of respondents had never tried blockchain games before. One major barrier to user onboarding cited in the survey was the complexity of connecting crypto wallets.
