Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin has converted another $1.6 million worth of memecoins he received into Ether (ETH) which he previously promised would be donated to charities.
The sale included $982,800 to Moo Deng (MOODENG), $231,000 to Monsterra (MSTR) and $183,000 to ETHEREUM IS GOOD (EBULL), as noted by blockchain analytics company Spot On Chain in an X-post dated October 13.
Buterin also sold the holdings Popcat (POPCAT), Fwog (FWOG) and vitalek buteren (VITALIK).
He has now turned $2.78 million value of memecoins in Ether and has donated $884,000 to charities in the last nine days, Spot On Chain said on October 13.
Buterin praised memecoin publishers for sending him coins to donate but suggested he donate directly instead.
On October 7, Buterin said in an X-post that he was donating all 10 billion memecoin tokens he received to an organization working on technology to combat airborne diseases.
On August 15, Buterin donated all Animal themed memecoins he had received money from the Effective Altruism Fund’s Animal Welfare Fund over the past twelve months.
More donations from Buterin should be on the way, too.
His $700 million crypto portfolio still consists of $2.4 million in MOODENG tokens, $144,000 in Neiro (NEIRO), $117,000 in MSTR and $80,000 in Degen (DEGEN), according to Spot On Chain’s facts.
Buterin has long been convinced that memecoins can contribute positively to society through financing important public projects or even give people from low-income countries the opportunity to earn a living.
Meanwhile, Buterin has been hitting Celebrity themed memecoins which are only intended to enrich the celebrities and early investors.
Buterin’s name was recently thrown into the ring to take out the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for 2024 by economists Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok.
“Vitalik built a platform, created a currency, you might say, disproved Mises’ regression theorem in the process, and clearly followed in Satoshi’s footsteps, but my goodness, what does someone have to do to get a Nobel Prize,” Cowen said during an Oct. 8 episode of the duo’s Marginal Revolution podcast.
Tabarrok expressed his agreement, adding: “Not only that, but Vitalik has continued to contribute to Ethereum’s mechanism design by moving towards proof-of-stake.”
